Information Technology: Meaning
The word Information Technology (IT) is a combination of two words. One is “Information” and the other is “ Technology”. Information means processed data, which carries meaning, and technology refers to the use of computers and telecommunications. IT means the application of computer and communication technologies for gathering, processing, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information.

Internet
The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks -- a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer.

Internet: Concept
Different computer experts have defined the Internet differently. The term, the Internet comes from a concept called ‘Internetworking’ which denotes the interaction between different networks of computers. We can define the Internet as the worldwide publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol(IP). It is a network of networks that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks which together carry various information and services.

Internet: Disadvantages
Theft of Personal Information Possible: If we use the Internet, we may be facing grave danger as our personal information such as name, address, credit card number, etc. can be accessed by other culprits to make our problems worse. Spamming: Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating for us, and so instead of just ignoring it, we should make an effort to try and stop these activities so that using the Internet can become that much safer. Pornography: This is perhaps the biggest threat related to people’s mental health particularly students’ healthy mental life. It is a very serious issue concerning the Internet. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting students use the Internet. Virus threat: The virus is nothing but a program that disrupts the normal functioning of our computer systems. Computers attached to the Internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up crashing our whole hard disk, causing us considerable headaches.

Internet: History
The Internet sometimes called simply "the Net," was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. From a handful of computers and users, today the Internet has grown to thousands of regional networks that can connect millions of users. This global network is not owned by any single individual, company or country. Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the total resources of the currently existing public telecommunication networks.

Internet: What are the Benefits?
The Internet has been perhaps the most outstanding innovation in the field of communication in the history of mankind. The Internet helps in three different ways to get information, provide information, and compile information. As with every single innovation, Internet has its own advantages and disadvantages. But usually, a greater magnitude of advantages outweighs its disadvantages. 20 years ago, the term Internet was practically anonymous to most people. And today Internet has become the most ever powerful tool for man throughout the world. The Internet is a collection of various services and resources. Access to the Internet gives a wide range of topics and media which facilitates different learning styles. The use of computers and the Internet enables learners to become researchers more easily because they can have direct access to data.

L

Learner
A person who is learning a subject or skill.

Learner's Characteristics: Importance
An understanding of learner characteristics enables students to be more efficient and effective in their learning. It also encourages educators to be more precise in their teachings. Learner characteristics are so diverse that they range from personal to academic.

Levels of Teaching
The three levels of teaching are i) Memory level: thoughtless teaching; ii) Understanding level: thoughtful teaching; and c) Reflective level: upper thoughtful teaching.

M

O

Online Chat
It is also called Internet Relay Chat, Internet Messengers or Chat Online. On the Internet, chatting is talking to other people who are using the Internet at the same time we are. Usually, this "talking" is the exchange of typed-in messages requiring one site as the repository for the messages (or "chat site") and a group of users who take part from anywhere on the Internet. In some cases, a private chat can be arranged between two parties who meet initially in a group chat. Chats can be ongoing or scheduled for a particular time and duration. Most chats are focused on a particular topic of interest.

Online Teaching: Effective Communication
When we are communicating with students whether in a face-to-face (F2F) class or an online class, we are communicating to give information or get information to gain understanding and build relationships. Communicating with students in an online environment requires a little more thought and planning than communicating with students in a (F2F) environment due to the absence of body language in the online environment. In a (F2F) class, you have the benefit of using body language and facial expression to help you communicate and get your message across to your student. When communicating in an online class, since you are limited to using text and/or images to help you get your point across, you do not have the benefit of using body language to help you communicate with your students. Awareness of limitations to communication capabilities within online environments will help you determine how to develop timely and relevant communications and how to effectively communicate with your online students. To determine what would be considered timely and relevant communication in an online class, we first need to decide why and what we need to communicate to students.

Teacher
A teacher, formally an educator, is a person who helps students to acquire knowledge, competence or virtue.

Teacher-Centred Vs Learner Centred
In a teacher-centered classroom, teachers choose what the students will learn, how the students will learn, and how the students will be assessed on their learning. In contrast, student-centered learning requires students to be active, responsible participants in their own learning and with their own pace of learning. A teacher-centered approach is an approach that encourages students to completely focus on their educator, while the learner-centered approach is an approach where both the educators and the students share an equal focus.

World Wide Web (WWW)
The most widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web (often abbreviated "WWW" or called "the Web"). Its outstanding feature is hypertext, a method of instant cross-referencing. On most Web sites, certain words or phrases appear in the text of a different color than the rest; often this text is also underlined. When we select one of these words or phrases, we will be transferred to the site or page that is relevant to this word or phrase. Sometimes there are buttons, images, or portions of images that are "clickable." If we move the pointer over a spot on a Web site and the pointer changes into a hand, this indicates that we can click and be transferred to another site.
